Question 360618: I need to know how to write this equation in order to find the answer.
If I am 48 and my grandson is 2 years old how old, in years, will I be when I am 3 times his age. I thought that I would just multiply by 3 but the professor said we do not do that to figure out the problem. I thought that maybe I would be 54 and he would be 16 but then it just did not look right. So I tried again and what I got today was I would be 60 and he would b3 4. I am so lost with this problem.

Let me be three times grandson's age after x years
my age now = 48, grandson's age now =2
(48+x) / (2+x) = 3
48+x =3(2+x)
48+x=6+3x
48-6=3x-x
42=2x
x= 21 -------- 21 years later
My age = 48+21= 69
grandson's age = 2+21= 23
...
69=23*3
...
