| Question 359646: I have a word problem that I need help figureing out please. It says: In 2010, Barbs bait shop net sales amounted to $38,460,000. In 2009, it's sales were $27,980,000.
Now it want's us to write the $38,460,000, and the $27,980,000 is scientific notation. Would this be something like 0000.3846? I am lost.
Then wants us to find the increase in sales from 2009 to 2010,and the % of that increase of the 2009 sales.
I am so lost on this I am not even knowing where to start. The numbers in the question are different from the numbers on my paper, because I want to understand how to do it, I don't want the answer to it. Thank you very much.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hi,
Taking it a Step at a time:
 1) Scientific Notaton is a 'shorthand' version expressing the number via a power of ten
$38,460,000, and the $27,980,000 is scientific notation
$38,460,000. = 3.846x10^7 (Note: deciamal point moved 7 units to left)
 $27,980,000. = 2.798x10^7
Increase in sales from 2009 to 2010
 3.846x10^7 - 2.798x10^7 = 1.048x10^7
% of that increase of the 2009 sales
 1.048x10^7/ 2.798x10^7 = .375 or 37.5%
