Question 35928: A photo is 3 inches longer that it is wide. A 2-inch border is placed around the photo making the total area of the photo and border 108in2. What are the dimensions of the photo?
(x-4)(x-10)=108^2
x^2-44x+ 40=108^2
x^2-9x-148=0
(x-13)(x+4)=0
x>0, so x=13
x-3=10
The dimension of the frame is 13*10

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the width be x.
The length is x+3;
The length with border is (x+3) + 4 = x+7;
The width with the border is x+4
Area = 108
(x+7)(x+4) = 108
=> x^2+11x-80 = 0
=> (x+16)(x-5) = 0
=> x = 5; (can't be -ve)
The dimension of the photo is 8 inch X 5 inch
