You can put this solution on YOUR website! Mark reads at an average rate of 30 pages per hour, while Mindy reads at an average rate of 40 pages per hour. If Mark starts reading a novel at 4:30PM, and Mindy begins reading the same novel at 5:20PM, at what time will they be reading the same page?
Mark Data:
rate = 30 pages/hr. time reading = x hrs.
Mindi Data:
rate = 40 pages/hr. time reading = (x-4/3)hrs
EQUATION:
rate(time) = rate(time)
30x pages = 40(x-4/3) pages
30x = 40x-160/3
-10x = - 160/3
x= 16/3 = 5 hr. and 20 minutes
Reading same page = 4:30 + 5:20 = 9:50PM
Cheers,
Stan H.
