Question 357441: A bank contains 44 coins (nickels, dimes, and quaters). There are twice as many dimes as nickels and 8 fewere nickels than quarters. How much money is in the bank?
nickels : x 5 =5x
dimes: 2x 10 =20x
quarters: x+8 25 =25x + 200
50x + 20x + 25x + 200 = 44
50x = -156
x = -3.12
The answer is a negative number and does not give me the amount of money. Where did I go wrong?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you are mixing number of coins and value of coins , it won't work

"A bank contains 44 coins" ___ n + d + q = 44

"There are twice as many dimes as nickels" ___ d = 2n

"8 fewere nickels than quarters" ___ q = n + 8

substituting ___ n + (2n) + (n + 8) = 44

solve for n(ickels) , and then substitute to find d(imes) and q(uarters)
