54 coins totaling $3.80 



Let x be the number of nickels, then the number of dimes would be (54-x)

5x + 10(54-x)= 380

5x + 540 - 10x =380

540 - 380 = 5x

160= 5x

32 = x

We have 32 nickels 

Checking the answer

5*32 + 10*22 = 160 + 220 = 380cents = $3.80
