Hi,

Let x represent the amount of the 50% solution.  then (12-x) would be the amount of the 20% solution

.50*x + .20(12-x) = .30*12gal

simplify and Solve



.30x = .30*12 -.20*12

.30x = .10*12

x = 4  is the amount of the 50% solution



8gal 20% alcohol solution  must be mixed with 4 gal of the 50% solution to get 12 gallons of 30%?
