Let d be the number of dimes and n be thenumber of nickles. You are told
n+%2B+d+=+52 so d+=+52+-+n
0.05n+%2B+0.1d+=+4.50
Now use those two equations to solve
0.05n+%2B+0.1d+=+4.50
5n+%2B+10d+=+450
5n+%2B+10%2852+-+n%29+=+450
5n+%2B+520+-+10n+=+450
-5n+=+450+-+520
-5n+=+-70
n+=+14
So there are 14 nickle.s Which means there must be 52-14=38 dimes
Does 3.80 in dimes + 70 cents in nicles equal 4.50?

dimes will be 52-x
..
5x+10(52-x)=450
5x+520-10x=450
-5x=-70
x=14 nickels
dimes = 52-14 = 38
...
38*10+5*14= 450
