Question 356465: I may be over thinking this word problem but please help:
Cassie and Mat were rowing in a raft crossing a stream. They poked a hole in the raft that allowed water to enter the boat at 10 gallons per minute. The raft will sink when 30 gallons of water enters the raft. Mat starts paddling to shore 1/2 mile away at the rate of 4mph. How fast must Cassie bale out water so they do not have to swim to shore? Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! speed * time = dist.
4x=1/2
x=1/8 hr. to get to shore
60* 1/8 = 7.5 min
.
7.5*10-30=75-30=45
Cassie must bail 45 gal in the 7.5 min
or 6 gal/min
.
