Scientific notation is a shorter way to express .00097: in terms of a 9.7 and a power of ten.
.0097 = 9.7 * .001
.
Note: some people just count the spaces from the decimal point
either backwards as in this case with a negatve power
or forwards as in the case of 97000. (9.7*10^4) with a positive power
to arrive at the proper power of ten to use in the Scientific notation
