Question 355997: Hi there!
I am in an Intermediate Algebra class and am so confused when it comes to, well, several things (hehehe... everything else is a project for another day=)
I am currently having difficulties writing equations as functions. I understand f(x) = y... I also understand that y needs to be solved. The equation I am working with is:
3x+5y=15
I don't necessarily need the answer... It is answered in my text. I am trying to figure out how to come to the solution myself (in Laymens terms so to speak). (Text answer is f(x)= -3/5x+3).
Any insight you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much!
Sincerely:
Gina G

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
like you said ... f(x) = y

subtracting 3x ___ 5y = -3x + 15

dividing by 5 ___ y = (-3/5)x + 3

this comes from graphing , where the independent variable (x) is graphed on the horizontal axis
___ and the dependent variable (y or f(x)) is graphed on the vertical axis

the value of the dependent variable depends on (is a function of) the value of the independent variable
