You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A 60-inch submarine sandwhich is cut into three pieces. The longest piece is twice the shortest piece,and the middle piece is 4 inches more than the shortest piece. Find the length of each piece.
.
Let x = shortest piece
then from "The longest piece is twice the shortest piece"
2x = longest piece
and from "the middle piece is 4 inches more than the shortest piece"
x+4 = middle piece
.
x + 2x + x+4 = 60
4x+4 = 60
4x = 56
x = 56/4
x = 14 inches (shortest)
.
Longest:
2x = 2(14) = 28 inches
.
Middle:
x+4 = 14+4 = 18 inches
