Question 352086: Without taking a single break, Mercedes hiked for 10 hours, up a mountain and back down by the same path. While hiking, she averaged 2 miles per hour on the way up and 3 miles per hour on the way down. How many miles was it from the base of the mountain to the top? Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let her take x hours treking up
she will take 10-x hours coming down.
speed upwards 2mph
speed downwards = 3mph
...
distance = same
2x = 3(10-x)
2x=30-3x
5x =30
x= 6 hours going up.
speed = 2mph
distance = 6*2=12 miles
