let plane speed in still air be x mph
wind speed be y mph
Time = distance / speed
with wind
2 hours 1000 miles
1000/x+y = 2
2x+2y=1000
x+y = 500.................1
Against wind 5/2 hours 1000 miles
1000/(x-y) = 5/2
5(x-y) = 2000
5x-5y=2000
/5
x-y = 400.................2
...
Add 1 & 2
2x= 500+400
2x=900
x= 450 mph speed of plane in still air
...
x+y = 500
so y= 50mph speed of wind
...
