Question 351494: Please help me solve this word problem:
A railroad track is laid along the arc of a circle of radius 1800ft. The circular part of the track subtends a central angle of 40 degrees. How long (in seconds) will it take a point on the front of a train traveling 30 mph to go around this portion of the track?
I know I need to draw a triangle and show degrees and the length of a side, I don't know which side needs to be labeled and where the curved railroad tract fits in. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you. Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The basic idea here is to find the length of the track. You do this by calculating the circumference of the circle (imagine that this track creates a whole circle). Once you have the circumference, multiply it by to find the length of the track that subtends 40 degrees.
When you have the length of the track, use the formula (distance = rate*time) to calculate the time it takes to travel that given distance at 30 mph.
