Question 351377: Hi, I am having trouble answering this problem -5x-10=2-(x+4) I'm not sure if I'm supposed to multiply the 2 and x then the 2 and 4 using the distributive property. Or if I'm supposed to subtract 2 from x and 4. I tried subtracting and got the answer of 3.5, but then I checked the problem and it was wrong. ( I tried using the distributive property, but subtracting instead of multiplying.) I am very confused can you please help me by going through the steps? Very much appreciated, Kayla.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-5x-10=2-%28x%2B4%29 Start with the given equation.

-5x-10=2-x-4 Distribute.

-5x-10=-x-2 Combine like terms on the right side.

-5x=-x-2%2B10 Add 10 to both sides.

-5x%2Bx=-2%2B10 Add x to both sides.

-4x=-2%2B10 Combine like terms on the left side.

-4x=8 Combine like terms on the right side.

x=%288%29%2F%28-4%29 Divide both sides by -4 to isolate x.

x=-2 Reduce.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

So the solution is x=-2
