Question 350811: PLEASE help me solve the problem.... thank you.
WORD PROBLEM: MIXTURE PROBLEMS: please help me... thanks.
Problem 1: Tank A contains 32 gallons of solutions which is 25 percent alcohol by volume. Tank b has a 50 gal. of solution which is 40 percent alcohol by volume.What volume should be taken from each tank and copmbined in order to make up 40 gallons of solution containing 30 percent alcohol by volume?
problem 2: Tank A holds 40 gal. of a salt solution containing 80 lb of dissolved salt. Tank b has 120 gal. of solution containing 60 lb of dissolved salt. what volume should be taken from each tank and the combined in order to make up 30 gal. of solution having a salt concentration of 1.5 lb/gal?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
PROBLEM 1)
.40X+.25(40-X)=.30*40
.40X+10-.25X=12
.15X=12-10
.15X=2
X=2/.15
X=13.333 GAL. OF 40% SOLUTION IS USED.
PROOF:
.40*13.333+.25(40-13.333)=.30*40
5.333+.25*26.667=12
5.333+6.667=12
12=12
**************************
PROBLEM 2)
THE 40 GALLON TANK HAS 80/40=2 POUNDS OF SALT PER GALLON.
THE 120 GALLON TANK HAS 60/120=.5 POUNDS OF SALT PER GALLON.
2X+.5(30-X)=1.5*30
2X+15-.5X=45
1.5X=45-15
1.5X=30
X=30/1.5
X=20 GALLONS FROM TANK A)
PROOF:
2*20+.5(30-20)=1.5*30
40+.5*10=45
40+5=45
45=45
