Question 347770: Sailing with the current, a boat takes 3 hours to travel 48 miles. The return trip, against the current, takes 4 hours. Find the average speed of the boat for the entire trip, and the speed of the current?
I got 14 mph for the speed of the boat and 2mph for the current, but the answer is 13 5/7 mph for the speed of the boat. This is what I got:
x-y*4= 48
x+y*3= 48 and then solved by elimination

Sailing with the current, a boat takes 3 hours to travel 48 miles.
-------------
48/3 = 16 mph
48/4 = 12 mph
The speed of the boat is the average = 14 mph
The current = 2 mph
The answer is not 13 5/7
