Question 347123: In a class of 18 students, there are 1/2 as many girls as boys. How many girls? How many boys?
I know the answer is 12 boys and 6 girls, but how do you write the equation and solve. I think it is 18=b+b1/2 but I am having difficulty solving.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
girls=x
boys=2x
x+2x=18
3x=18
x=6
2x=12
It is easier to set up the problem this way.
Build from the smallest to largest.
Either way works, but the first sample is for us lazy folks.
-----------
but
b+1/2b=18
1.5b=18
b=12
1/2b=6
Have a good day.
