why? this is how it works:
say something easy since we are dealing with %s just say his salary is $100.
if he loses 40% that would mean he loses $40
so $100-$40=$60
at $60 he gaines 50% back so 1/2=50% and 1/2 of 60 is 30
so $60+$30=$90
if he started with $100 and now only has $90 that is a 10% decrease in salary because 100-90=10 and $10 is 10% of $100
