Question 342641: What is a function, in your own words? give an example of a function using a variable x and explain how we evaluate a function for a given value of x. Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
The mathematical concept of a function expresses the intuitive idea that one quantity (the argument of the function, also known as the input) completely determines another quantity (the value, or the output). A function assigns a unique value to each input of a specified type. The argument and the value may be real numbers, but they can also be elements from any given sets: the domain and the co-domain (also called the range) of the function.
The above is what Wikipedia says. Your assignment is to write it in your own words. I can't write it in your words, only you can do that.
You can come up with your own example. To evaluate a given function for a particular value, substitute the value for every instance of the independent (i.e. input or argument) variable (frequently ) and then perform the indicated arithmetic.
