You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A jeweler wants to make a silver alloy to be used to make necklaces.
How many ounces of a silver alloy that costs $3.50 per ounce should be mixed
with one that costs $8.00 per ounce to make a new 40-ounce alloy that costs $6.20 per ounce?
:
Let x = amt of $8 silver
then
(40-x) amt of $3.50 silver
:
Amt of silver equation:
:
8x + 3.5(40-x) = 6.2(40)
:
8x + 140 - 3.5x = 248
:
8x - 3.5x = 248 - 140
:
4.5x = 108
x - 108%2F4.5
x = 24 oz of $8 silver
and
40 - 24 = 16 oz of $3.50 silver
:
;
Check solution in original equation
8*(24) + 3.5(16) = 6.2(40)
192 + 56 = 248
