John's age now = x + 6

Jill's age now = x

John's age 5 years ago = (x + 6) - 5

Jill's age 5 years ago = x - 5
====================================
(x + 6) - 5 = 3(x - 5)

x - 1 = 3x - 15

x - 3x = -15 + 1

-2x = -14

x = -14/-2

x = 7

Jill is 7 year old.

john is 6 years older than jill 5 years ago john was 3 times as old as jill was then, form equation in x and solve it to find what age jill is now

Let Jill's and John's current ages be J%5Bi%5D and J%5Bo%5D, respectively

Since john is currently 6 years older than jill, then we'll have:
J%5Bo%5D+=+J%5Bi%5D+%2B+6, or, J%5Bo%5D+-+J%5Bi%5D+=+6____ eq(i)

And, since 5 years ago john was 3 times as old as jill was then, then we'll also get:
J%5Bo%5D+-+5+=+3%28J%5Bi%5D+-+5%29, or, J%5Bo%5D+-+3J%5Bi%5D+=+-+10 ___ eq (ii)

J%5Bo%5D+-+J%5Bi%5D++=+6 ______ eq(i)
J%5Bo%5D+-+3J%5Bi%5D+=+-+10 ___ eq (ii)

2J%5Bi%5D+=+16 __ Subtracting eq (ii) from eq (i)

J%5Bi%5D+=+16%2F2 ____ J%5Bi%5D+=+8

Therefore, J%5Bi%5D or Jill's current age = highlight_green%288%29 years.
