Question 33943: The sum of two numbers is 40 the difference is 8 what are the two numbers ..
I know what the two numbers are.. its 16 and 24 but i dont know how to work the problem out so next time i have to do so how would i show my work or is it just the trial and error method? Thank you so much

Let the 1st no. be x
Let the 2nd no. be y
x+y=40 in this, we add the two equation
x-y=8
2x=48 y is eliminated because y-y is 0
2x/2=48/2
x=24
