You can put this solution on YOUR website!
At 7:00 a.m. a man started from a town A travelling towards a town B at the rate of 16 miles per hour.
rate = 16 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/16 hrs.
----------------------------------------------
At 8:15, another man started from B, traveling toward A at the rate of 20 miles per hour.
rate = 20 mph ; distance = 40-x miles ; time = (40-x)/20 hrs.
----------------------------------
Find when and where the two men will meet if A and B are 40 miles apart.
-------
Equation to find "x":
early man time - later man time = 5/4 hr
x/16 - (40-x)/20 = 5/4
Multiply thru by 80 to get:
5x - 4(40-x) = 100
5x-160+4x = 100
9x = 260
x = 260/9 = 28.89 miles from point A
40-x = 11.11 miles from point B
----
early man time of meeting: x/16 = 1.81 hrs
Clock time: 7:00 + 1hr + 0.81*60min = 8:49 minutes
