Question 335792: Wei-Jen works due north of home. Her husband Alan works due east. They leave for work at the same time. By the time Wei-Jen is 5 mi from home, the distance between them is 1 mi more than Alan's distance from home. How far from home is Alan? I did try to solve this problem but i think i missed a step, so it just got me more confused with the problem.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The distance from each to home are the legs of a right triangle.
The distance between them is the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
Use the Pythagorean theorem,
5%5E2%2BX%5E2=%28X%2B1%29%5E2
Take it from there and solve for X, Alan's distance from home.
