Functions containing a radical with an even index (square root, 4th root, etc.) must restrict the domain so that the value under the radical is non-negative.
Functions with a denominator must restrict the domain so that then denominator cannot go to zero.
Note that your second problem has a denominator that has no real zeros, hence the domain is all real numbers.
