Question 33395: JIM SELLS A STATUE FOR 670$ WHICH IS 35% PROFIT OVER HIS COST. HOW MUCH DID THE STATUE ORIGINALLY COST? Answer by mszlmb(115) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Check this over yourself to make sure I didn't do it wrong myself!
Well it says Jim sells it for 670$, and that 670 is 35% PROFIT over the actual price (hereby dubbed X). Therefore, 670 = X + (35% of X). To say "35% of.." is the same as saying ".35 times..".
Knowing that '35% of X' is the same as .35X (.35 TIMES X), we put it into the equation. 670 = X+.35X . It is almost unnecessary to mention that the X without a multiplicant (making up my own words here) is X*1. Basically, X+.35X is the same as 1X+.35X is the same as 1.35X. Our equation yields 670=1.35X .
I'm sure you've been taught to take over from here in algebra, just divide both sides by 1.35 . This gives you the simple equation 496.3=X. duh, that's it. X is your answer. No, really. You can stop reading now. Go! shoo! go on! jeez....
