Question 332321: 2 cars leave an intersection: one car travels North; the other car travels East.
When the car traveling North had gone 12 miles, distance between 2 cars was 4 miles more than distance traveled by car heading East. How far had eastbound car traveled?
Do I set up as: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where a = 12, b = side 2 and c = (b + 4);
clearly, I do NOT have a clue; thanks for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
: 2 cars leave an intersection: one car travels North; the other car travels East.
When the car traveling North had gone 12 miles, distance between 2 cars was 4
miles more than distance traveled by car heading East.
How far had eastbound car traveled?
:
N

12

*------------x---------E
:
x = distance traveled by the eastbound car
:
This is a pythag problem, dist between the two cars is the hypotenuse, given as:
x + 4
:
12^2 + x^2 = (x+4)^2
144 + x^2 = x^2 + 8x + 16
144 - 16 + x^2 - x^2 = 8x
128 = 8x
x = 128%2F8
x = 16 mi traveled by the eastbound car when (16+4=20) mi apart
:
:
Check 12^2 + 16^2 = 20^2
:
How about now, do you have clue about this?
