let the number of football cards be Y
x+y = 125
number of baseball cards he has is five more than three times the number of football
X = 5+3Y
5+3Y+Y = 125
5+4Y = 125
4Y= 125 - 5 = 120
y = 120/4 = 30
X = 5+3(30)
X= 5+90 = 95
Number of baseball cards : 95
Number of football cards : 30

Let B be the number of baseball cards and F be the number of football cards.

now try to form equations with the given informations.
EQ 1. B + F = 125
EQ 2. B = 5 + 3 *F
put the value of B( from eq 2) in eq 1.
we get,
5 + 3F +F = 125
4F = 125 - 5
F = 120/4
= 30.
put F = 30 in EQ 1.,
we get B = 125 -30
= 95.
Therefore the number of baseball cards is 95 and foot ball cards is 30.
