Question 328125: John and William leave their home traveling in opposite directions on a straight road. John drives 20 miles per hour faster than William After 4 hours they are 250 miles apart. Find their rates

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

If they travel in opposite direction, the distances are equal.
FOR JOHN:
rate = x + 20
Time 4 hours
FOR WILLIAM:
rate = x
Time = 4 hours
4(x + 20) + 4x = 250
Atfer doing the math on paper, I found x to be 85/4.
William's rate = 85/4 o 21.25 mph.
John rate = 85/4 + 20 or 165/4 or 41.25 mph.
I hope this helps.
