and y be the other leg
one leg = 3
..
x^2-y^2= 9
(x+y)(x-y)=9
(x+y)=9
9(x-y)=9
x-y =1
x+y+3=12
..
Add the 2 equations
x-y+x+y+3=12+1
2x+3=13
2x=10
x=5 feet the hypotenuse
the second leg will be 4 feet
