Question 323046: (x)Emily and (y)Camille started from the same city and drove in opposite directions on the freeway. after 3 hours they were 354 miles apart. if they had gone in the same direction, Emily would have been 18 miles ahead of camille. how fast did each woman drive? Total distance between x and y when they traveled in opposite directions? Total distance when they traveled in the same direction?
I'm suppose to make to equations and put into matrix using cramer's rule.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! x=Emily's rate and y=Camille's rate.
They drive in opposite directions, so between them they travel 354 miles.
3x+3y=354
Now, if they go in the same direction, the difference is 18
3x-3y=18
There are the two equations to solve. Use Cramer's rule if you have to. But it can also be solved by substitution, elimination, rref,....
