You can put this solution on YOUR website! Solve for x:
4x(x-6) - 5x(x-5) = -2
Multiply to eliminate the brackets
4x^2 - 24x - 5x^2 + 25x = -2
Combine like terms
4x^2 - 5x^2 - 24x + 25x + 2 = 0
:
-x^2 + x + 2 = 0
Easier to factor if we change the signs, multiply by -1
x^2 - x - 2 = 0
Factors to
(x-2)(x+1) = 0
Two solutions
x = 2
x = -1
:
x: 2, -1
:
:
Confirm our solution using x=-1, in the original problem
4(-1)(-1-6) - 5(-1)(-1-5) = -2
-4(-7) - (-5) (-6) = -2
+28 + 5(-6) = -2
28 - 30 = -2; confirms our solution of x=-1
:
You should confirm the solution x=2, in the same manner
