The simple rule to remember when multiplying (and dividing) two numbers is:
If the signs of the two numbers are alike (both positive or both negative) the answer will be a positive number.
If the signs of the two numbers are not alike (Negative and positive or positive and negative) the answer will be a negative number.
Examples:
+3 X (+4) = +12 Signs are the same, answer is positive.
-3 X (-4) = +12 Signs are the same, answer is positive.
+3 X (-4) = -12 Signs are not the same, answer is negative.
