Question 320368: solve by elimination method
x+7y=23
-x+6y= 16
Answer by Sunny Day(15) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Here you are given two equations and asked to find the value of x and y by eliminating one variable. On studying the two equations, we can see that 'x' has opposite signs in the two equations. So on adding the two equations, theyy will get eliminated and then you can solve for y.
x+7y=23 ------------ (1)
-x+6y= 16 ------------ (2)
______________
Adding (1) and (2)
13y = 23 + 16
13y = 39
y = 39/13 = 3
Now put this value of y in either (1) or (2) to get the value of x.
ie. x + 7X3 = 23
x + 21 = 23
x = 23 - 21 = 2
So the solution in x = 2 and y = 3.
[cross- checking
Put x = @ and y = 3 in (2)
-2 + (6X3) = -2 + 18 = 16 which is the same as the given value.]
