You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is a rate of work problem.
"Milo and Shamika working together can wash all the windows of their house in 3 hours. Shamika can do it alone in 8 hours. If Shamika cannot help Milo how long would it take milo to the job when he has to do it all by himself?
total work time of 2 people (x hours and y hours) in hours = 1/(1/x + 1/y), since you are taking jobs/(jobs/hours) or jobs * hours/jobs
let Milo's time = x, let Shamika's time = y
3 = 1/(1/x + 1/8)
3 * (1/x + 1/8) = 1
3/x + 3/8 = 1 (distributed 3 across)
24/x + 3 = 8 (multiplied both sides by 8, 3*8=24)
24 + 3x = 8x (multiplied both sides by x)
-5x = -24 (brought x's to one side and constants to the other)
5x = 24 (divided both sides by -1)
x = 24/5 = 4 4/5 = 4.8 hours for Milo
