Question 318600: Hi, I am taking college algebra and need help with this word problem to turn in tomorrow.
Bottle 1 is 60% alcohol and 6 liters, and Bottle 2 is 10% alcohol. We want to mix them to form a new bottle which is 30% alcohol. Find the volumes that we need from Bottle 1 and Bottle 2 and also find the volume of the new bottle.
Thank you so much.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You have two equations to set up : A volume equation and a concentration equation.
Let X be the amount of 10% alcohol you need.
The total volume is,
6%2BX=6%2BX
Not very exciting or useful with this problem.
.
.
.
The concentration is
60%286%29%2B10%28X%29=30%286%2BX%29
360%2B10X=180%2B30X
20X=180
X=9

.
Add 9 liters of 10% alcohol to the 6 liters of 60% to make 15 liters of 30% alcohol.
