Question 315237: I had this question on an exam, but feel like there is some information missing. Please help me work this out in my mind so I can correctly answer this.
Mary works due north of home. Her husband Alan works due east. They leave for work at the same time. When Mary is 7 miles from home, the distance between them is one mile more than Alan's distance from home. How far is Alan from home. The answer is 24 miles, but I don't see how. Please help. You can put this solution on YOUR website! Mary, Alan, and their house form a right triangle.
The legs are the distance from Mary to home and the distance from Alan to home.
The hypotenuse is the distance from Mary to Alan.
Since it's a right triangle, the Pythagorean theorem applies.
