The width of the rectangle which is known to be 3 feet, the unknown length of the rectangle, and the diagonal that measures 5 feet form a right triangle. 3-4-5 is a Pythagorean Triple, therefore the missing side of the rectangle must measure 4 feet. The area of the rectangle is the length times the width, so 3 times 4 is 12 square feet.
