5x-8=12x+13

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

you have 5X - 8 = 12X + 13
You can go 2 different ways:
1. since you have 4 same terms on both sides (X on both sides and regulat numbers without X on both sides) you can subtract from one side to another:

so, subtract 5x from the left side, and the rule goes, you must subtract 5x on the other side... but... you can only subtract (or add) from the same terms.
Ok subtract 5X from the left side, it then disappears (5X minus 5X is Zero), and subtract 5X from the right side. and since theres only 1 factor alike (the 12X) you do 12X minus 5X, now it looks like this:
-8 = 7X + 13
Now subtract the regular numbers that dont have an X, so take 13 minus 13 is nothing, and (-8) minus 13 = -21. now it looks like this:
-21 = 7X
Since you cant subtract anymore (because they are different terms) you must divide. to get the X by itself, divide both sides by 7. so 7 divided by 7 is 1, and -21 divided by 7 is -3. so the answer:
X = -3
Basically:
1. 5X - 8 = 12X + 13
2. - 8 = 7X + 13
3. -21 = 7x
4. -3 = X
