Question 314330: Paul is 7 years younger than Carol. Three years from now, she will be twice as old as he will be. How old is each now?
Paul Carol
My work Paul is NOW: x-7 & three years from NOW would be x-7/2.
Carol is NOW: x & three years from NOW would be 2(x-7).
I got this answer: x-7 = 2(x-7)
x-7 = 2x-14
7=x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x=Carol now
x-7 = Paul now

x+3= Carol in 3 years
x-7+3=x-4= paul in 3 years

x+3=2(x-4)
x+3=2x-8
-x=-11
x=11 Carol now
x-7= 4 Paul now

Check: In 3 years, Carole will be 14 and Paul will be 7. Carol will indeed be twice as old as Paul.
