You can put this solution on YOUR website! pam can build a house in 11 2/3 months and jerry can build a house in 8 3/4 months. if they work together, how long would it take to build the house working together.
----
Pam DATA:
time = 35/3 months/job ; rate = 3/35 job/month
----
Jerry DATA:
time = 35/4 months/job ; rate = 4/35 job/month
-------------
Together DATA:
time = x months/job ; rate = 1/x job/month
-----------------------------------------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
3/35 + 4/35 = 1/x
---
7/35 = 1/x
x = 35/7 = 5 months (time for them to do the job together)

:
Convert 11 2/3 to
Convert 8 3/4 to
:
Let t = time required if they work together
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
A shared work equation: + = 1
Invert the dividing fractions and multiply; you have: + = 1
multiply by 35 to get rid of the denominators
3t + 4t = 35
7t = 35
t =
t = 5 days working together
