Choose one of the equations and solve for one variable.
I'm going to solve the first equation for y.
subtract x from both sides:
y=56-x
Now use this value for y--->(56-x) and
substitute it into the other equation:
3x+(56-x)=56
solve for x. Combine like terms.
2x +56 = 56
subtract 56 from both sides.
2x = 0
divide by 2:
x=0
Now use one of the original equations and replace x with zero:
0+y=56
and solve for y:
y=56
The answer is, x=0 and y=56
