larger number: x+9
smaller number: x

larger number + smaller number = 55
x+9 + x = 55
x+9 + x = 55 | -9 on both sides
x + x = 46 | re-arranging
2x = 46 | :2 on both sides
x = 23

smaller number : 23
larger number: 32 (23+9)

let the smaller number be = x

So the bigger number is = x + 9

the sum of the numbers = 55

i.e. x + x + 9 = 55

so 2x + 9 = 55

= 2x = 55-9 = 46

= x = 23

= the numbers are 23; and 32. Answer
