Question 313091: hello, i am working on this math problem and i am not sure if i am solving it the right way or not. this is what i have done so far:
Y=%28x-1%29%28x-5%29
x%5E2-x-5x%2B5
x%5E2-7x%2B5
x=-2
%28-2%29%5E2-7%28-2%29%2B5=Y
4%2B14%2B5=Y
23=Y
vertex=(-2,23)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Y=%28x-1%29%28x-5%29
x%5E2-x-5x%2B5
When you FOIL it will be
x^2 - 5x - x + 5, (essentially the same as you had)
then combining the middle terms
x%5E2+-+6x+%2B+5
x=-2
%28-2%29%5E2+-6%28-2%29+%2B+5+=+Y
4+%2B+12+%2B+5+=+Y
y = 21
vertex=(-2,21)
This is not the vertex, just an ordered pair
:
To find the vertex, find the axis of symmetry, x = -b/(2a); b=-6; a=1
x = %28-%28-6%29%29%2F%282%2A1%29
x = 6%2F2
x = 3 is the axis of symmetry
Find the value of y using x=3
y = 3^2 - 6(3) + 5
y = 9 - 18 + 5
y = -4
:
The vertex: 3,-4

Looks like this:
