Question 310951: I homeschool my son - 9th grader - we have just started Expressing square roots and there is a part that I am totally lost in. I do not remember or understand index's. How do I explain to him What an index of a square root is - here is one question: What two integers are these radicals between. The index is 3 and the square root is 29. Or the index is 4 and the square root is 15. Thank you. Joan Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Please get a knowleageable tutor for your son.

I homeschool my son - 9th grader - we have just started Expressing square roots and there is a part that I am totally lost in. I do not remember or understand index's. How do I explain to him What an index of a square root is - here is one question: What two integers are these radicals between. The index is 3 and the square root is 29. Or the index is 4 and the square root is 15. Thank you. Joan
=========================
The index tells you what root is being expressed.
If there is no index on the radical sign the root is "square root".
If there is an index of 3 the root requested is "cube root"
Then you have 4th root, then 5th root etc.
==========================================================
What two integers are these radicals between. The index is 3 and the square root is 29. Or the index is 4 and the square root is 15.
---
cbrt(27)< cbrt(29) < cbrt(64)
3 < cbrt(29) < 4
---------------------------------------
4thrt(1) < 4thrt(15) < 4thrt(16)
1 < 4thrt(15) < 2
==========================
Examples:
sqrt(16) = 4
cbrt(27) = 3
4th root(16) = 2
5th root(32) = 2
etc.
