Question 310830: I am trying to find the domain. I have read my materials and I don't understand how to find it. Here is one of the problems I am trying to do:
f(x)=___8___
..........5x-14
Could someone please explain how this is done in steps so I can understand how each step works?
Thank You in advance!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The domain is the 'x values' that result in a valid f(x). Many times, there will be no value for x that results in an undefined f(x). However, for this problem, the thing you need to note is that any value of x that makes 5x-14 = 0 will result in a fraction with a 0 in the denominator. Zero in a denominator is undefined. So the domain for this expression is 'All x except x=14/5'
Does that make sense to you?

------------------------------
In basic algebra there are only 3 conditions that restrict the domaim
of most functions:
1: A variable in the denominator which might cause the denominator to
be undefined.
2: Even roots of an expression which might result in a non Real Number solution.
3: logarithm of an expression which might not be positive in value.
------------------
Note: If none of those three conditions occur in your problem the
domain is "All Real Numbers".
------------------
That said you see your problem has a variable in the denominator.
---
That denominator must not be zero as that would make the fraction undefined.
So you solve 5x-14 = 0
x = 14/5
---
That value is excluded from the domain.
---
Final Answer: the domain for your problem is all Real Numbers
except x = 14/5
