You can put this solution on YOUR website! Harold Phoenix-Person drove for 3 hours on I-10, then decreased his speed by 10 miles per hour for the next 3 hours. If his total trip was 360 miles, what was his speed the first hour of his trip in miles per hour?
--------------
1st leg DATA:
time = 3 hrs ; rate = x mph ; distance = 3x miles
-------------
2nd leg DATA:
time = 3 hrs ; rate = x-10 mph ; distance = 3(x-10) miles
-----------------------
Equation:
miles + miles = 360
3x + 3x-30 = 360
6x = 390
x = 65 mph (rate during the 1st 3 hrs)
