Question 309906: Can anyone help with this? Any help would be appreciated!!
a farmer has 800 yd of fencing to enclose a rectangular pasture, since one side of the pasture borders a river, that side does not need to be fenced. If the side perpendicular to the river must be twice as long as the side parallel to the river, what are the dimensions of the rectangular pasture?
I know that a = lw (area = length times width) and that I've got two sides 2L + 2W which give the perimeter, but I don't know how to put that all together and I'm not sure how the 800 fits in, would that be my known variable of the perimeter? Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! a farmer has 800 yd of fencing to enclose a rectangular pasture, since one side
of the pasture borders a river, that side does not need to be fenced.
If the side perpendicular to the river must be twice as long as the side
parallel to the river, what are the dimensions of the rectangular pasture?
:
Let x = the side parallel to river
then
2x = the two sides perpendicular to the river
:
x + 2(2x) = 800
x + 4x = 800
5x = 800
x =
x = 160 yd the single side parallel to the river
and
2(160) = 320 yd the two sides perpendicular to the river
:
Pasture is 320 by 160 yds
:
Check: 160 + 2(320) = 800
